2. Description of the Related Art
Conjunctivitis (“pinkeye”) is a condition that results from inflammation of the surface of the eye, usually the conjunctiva. The conjunctiva is the clear membrane that lines the inner surface of the eyelid and covers the white of the eye. The conjunctiva plays a crucial role in protecting the underlying tissue of the eye, especially the cornea, by providing a self-cleaning, mucous-producing epithelium. However, many disorders, including autoimmune diseases, parasitic infections, bacterial infections, inflammatory diseases, tumors, and congenital or acquired disorders, may result in the destruction of the epithelium of the conjunctiva, usually by hyperproliferation, and infiltration of the epithelium by inflammatory cells. The conjunctiva is often thickened as a result, and vision may be impaired.
There are two classes of conjunctivitis, acute and chronic. The acute forms of conjunctivitis usually affect one eye and arise from a virus. They are contagious and therefore must be treated, in the case of a contagious disease, at the source. An infected eye may be treated with a combination of steroids and antibiotics. Chronic conjunctivitis, however, is not easily treated and must be treated for the long term. It may be caused by allergies or poor hygiene, among other causes. The inflammation, thickening, and swelling of the conjunctiva cause an allergic reaction that induces mucous to flow from the mucous glands. If the inflammation, swelling, and thickening are extensive enough, the gland may be overactive and create excessive mucous. The mucous can be thick, gelatinous, and unappealing to the eye. The conditions are treated with drops of steroid and/or antibiotic agents and with antihistamine and/or decongestant agents. More potent ac619d1d87
